Bayesian Modelling of Prehistoric Corbelled Domes

چکیده

The field of archaeology provides a rich source of complex, non-standard problems ideally suited to Bayesian inference. In this paper, we discuss the application of Bayesian methodology to prehistoric corbelled tomb data collected from a variety of sites around Europe. We show how the corresponding analyses may be carried out with the aid of reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation techniques and, by calculating posterior model probabilities, we show how to distinguish between competing models. In particular, we discuss how earlier analyses of tomb data by Cavanagh and Laxton (1981, 1982, 1985) and by Buck et al (1993), where structural changes are anticipated in the shape of the tomb at different depths, can be extended and improved by considering a wider range of models. We also discuss the extent to which these analyses may be useful in addressing questions concerning the origin of tomb-building technologies, particularly in distinguishing between corbelled domes built by different civilisations, as well as the processes involved in their construction.

Estimation of skeletal adult age distribution of Okhotsk people in northern Japan

The demographic structure of prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies has contributed to our understanding of the life history patterns of past human populations. The purposes of this study are to examine the human skeletal remains associated with the Okhotsk culture, to estimate age-at-death distribution using the Buckberry–Chamberlain system of auricular surface aging and the Bayesian approach, ...

Effusive Lunar Domes near Kepler and Piccolomini: Morphometry and Mode of Emplacement

Introduction: Lunar domes are smooth low features similar to low terrestrial shield volcanoes. They were formed during the terminal phases of lunar eruptions and mostly occur in the maria. A few domes have been reported in the highlands, but these are usually difficult to observe because of the brightness and ruggedness of the surrounding terrain. According to [1,2], constructional volcanic fea...

A Bayesian model decision support system: dryland salinity management application

Addressing environmental management problems at catchment scales requires an integrated modelling approach, in which key bio-physical and socio-economic drivers, processes and impacts are all considered. Development of Decision Support Systems (DSSs) for environmental management is rapidly progressing. This paper describes the integration of physical, ecological, and socio-economic components i...

Bayesian Inference for Spatial Beta Generalized Linear Mixed Models

In some applications, the response variable assumes values in the unit interval. The standard linear regression model is not appropriate for modelling this type of data because the normality assumption is not met. Alternatively, the beta regression model has been introduced to analyze such observations. A beta distribution represents a flexible density family on (0, 1) interval that covers symm...

Modelling Prehistoric Mining

Mining structures are among the most complex economic systems in prehistory. Until recently, research into prehistoric production processes has strongly focused on technological reconstruction. The complexity of production processes, their interconnectedness with the surrounding socioeconomic network and issues of quantification have, quite regrettably, been addressed to a much lesser extent. S...
